First placed in Singapore: 1972
at the base of the revolving restaurant in OUE Tower, between OUE Bayfront and what is now called OUE Link, the redevelopment of the old Change Alley Aerial Plaza. (I say bring back the old name.)
The carved boulders around the water feature have been rearranged, but this is the same location
Patron:
These are among the surviving remnants of a series of 1970s projects commissioned by George Lien Ying Chow, founder of OUB Bank (now owned by UOB), from Taiwan-born artist Yu Yu Yang. The current renovation of the revolving restaurant tower, with its metal panelling, is not a positive contribution to the city scape (though the original tower design wasn't much better it must be said). The Yu Yu Yang boulders give us a sense of what might be a more interesting way to treat this space.
The original placement was more lively and active, and the water feature more approachable. Putting these boulders in a row all in the same relation to the water is tidier but robs the ensemble of its energy.
The original developer was Clifford Holdings.
The historical image is taken from the artist's official website. Thanks to Koh Ngaun How for the reference!
