Memorial to the Unknown Warrior of the Indian National Army

artist unknown

First placed in Singapore: 1945

Esplanade Park

There is a historical marker at the place where the old memorial stood. Some describe the marker also as a memorial.

Patron: Subash Chandra Bose laid the foundation stone

The foundation stone for the monument was laid in July 1945, it was destroyed a few short months later by the British South East Asia Command. The scale of the monument is hard to determine from the evidence I have seen, though a photograph published without attribution on a National Archives site suggests that the four levels of the stepped base added up to at least two metres in height. Which, if the drawing reproduced on the historical marker is to scale, would make the slab of the memorial 6 to 8 metres in height. It is interesting that Times of India press coverage(accessed December 19, 2020) of Rahul Gandhi's visit to the memorial site elided the fact that what he was visiting was a marker of the site of the memorial and not the memorial itself.
