Well, how can you argue with a life force? At the very least, the work returns us to the kind of hyperbolic label which grants art such great power to transform everyone’s fortunes and lives! If only! Perhaps it is Fengshui that holds the power, not art, but still…

Formally, the work has a finely judged plastic quality, the three dimensional twisting through space is subtle, bringing it into dialog with the high rise office buildings around it. (And in case you were wondering, that sort of regard, if you face upriver, High Street Centre and Riverwalk still look as pedestrian as ever). The sculpture is not exactly monumental, almost antimonumental, its scale hard to read in photos (it is 12 metres tall).

The work is the color of Corten steel, but is said to be bronze. I didn’t touch it, but the finish, and little dots of white where the work joins its low base makes it look like painted plaster. Which is too bad. Perhaps this surface treatment is a response to worrying about weathering. Progress & Advancement, around the corner, another bronze, looks in dire need of treatment.

Vitalitá is visible from across the river, where it looks like a long tooth or fang.

Text of the Label:

Vitalità 《生命力》
Bronze (青铜) 205 x 220 x 1200 cm Vitalità reflects the vital energy of the universe known as "qi". Embodying the gi in her visceral line of this sculpture, Anna Chiara Spellini has endowed the form of Vitalità with the vigour of being ready to move upward and forward. Commissioned by UOB, and part of the UOB Art Collection, Vitalità is a life force that creates newness, growth, good fortune and abundance for all.
