Mural at Raffles Hotel

Gerard D'Alton Henderson

First placed in Singapore: 1955

I have a vague memory of a mural behind the old Long Bar, which was blocking the current driveway to the hotel. It must have been destroyed in the renovation of 1991.

Patron: Raffles Hotel

At the tender age of 27 Henderson was given a commission to create two murals in the "entrance hall" of the Raffles Hotel in 1955 (Straits Times, 2 July 1955, p. 5). One was a "bold and colourful impression of a Malayan market scene, depicting Malays, Indians and Chinese each in their national dress".
